Highlands Region
The Highlands Region is known for its rugged terrain, mountainous landscapes, and diverse cultures. The region is characterised by its high-altitude valleys and mountain ranges, making it one of the most unique and picturesque areas in Papua New Guinea.
The Highlands Region is divided into several provinces, each with its own distinct characteristics and cultural diversity.
- Southern Highlands Province:
- Known for its rich natural resources, including oil and gas. The province is also culturally diverse with various ethnic groups.
- Enga Province:
- Home to the famous Mount Hagen, the third-largest city in Papua New Guinea, and the Enga Cultural Show, which showcases the region’s traditional dances and customs.
- Western Highlands Province:
- A province with a mix of traditional and modern influences, known for its vibrant cultural events, including the Mount Hagen Cultural Show.
- Hela Province:
- A relatively new province, created in 2012, known for its unique tribal cultures and the traditional Huli Wigmen.
- Chimbu (Simbu) Province:
- Renowned for its challenging and mountainous landscapes, the province has a rich cultural heritage and is famous for the Goroka Show, which attracts visitors from around the world.
- Jiwaka Province:
- Established as a separate province in 2012, Jiwaka is known for its agricultural activities and cultural diversity.
These provinces collectively contribute to the cultural tapestry and economic activities of the Highlands Region, playing a significant role in the overall socio-economic development of Papua New Guinea.
